Dal is a staple ingredient in every region of India and often eaten everyday. Dal provides fiber, vitamins, and is an excellent source of protein, especially when eaten along with grains. Dal dishes are typically made by boiling the dal in water until soft and then adding a variety of spices. Dal is normally served as an accompaniment to a main dish, but can also serve as a main dish, especially in vegetarian meals.
