At your local supermarket
Good selection and convenient |
With the popularity of Indian cuisine growing in the United States, more and more ingredients are now available at local supermarkets. Spices commonly used in Indian cuisine can often be found in the spice aisle, where there is usually a section for gourmet spices. Some of the larger supermarkets may even have a section just for Indian cuisine in the ethnic foods aisle, where you can find items such as lentils, basmati rice, and canned coconut milk.
Although the prices at your local supermarket may be a little higher than an Indian grocery store, you have the convenience of picking up ingredients during any regular grocery trip. |
At an Indian grocery store
Cheaper prices and bulk items |
Shopping at an Indian grocery store is a worthwhile endeavor; the prices are normally lower than what you will find at your local supermarket. Indian grocers also rent Bollywood movies, carry South Asian CDs, and stock many ingredients that cannot be found at a regular supermarket.
If you are not sure if you have an Indian grocery store nearby, here are a couple of tips to locate one:
- Find a website specifically devoted to listing Indian grocers, such as www.thokalath.com. This website lists Indian grocers by state.
- Ask around at an Indian restaurant in your area, they will most probably know of a good Indian grocery store in the area.
